Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare

When can I enroll in Medicare?

You can enroll in Medicare during the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after. If you miss this window, you may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1 - March 31) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period based on life events like retirement or losing employer coverage.

What’s the difference between Standard Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Supplement plans?

Standard Medicare (Original Medicare - Parts A & B)

  • Part A: Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, and hospice (usually no premium if you worked 10+ years).
  • Part B: Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services (monthly premium applies).
  • Does NOT cover: Prescription drugs, dental, vision, or hearing.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • Private insurance alternative to Original Medicare.
  • Includes Parts A & B and often Part D (prescription drug coverage).
  • May offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and wellness programs.
  • Requires using a network of doctors and hospitals (like an HMO or PPO).
  • Lower monthly premiums but potential higher out-of-pocket costs when using healthcare services.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

  • Works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
  • Helps cover out-of-pocket costs like copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance.
  • No doctor network restrictions—see any provider that accepts Medicare.
  • Higher monthly premiums but lower out-of-pocket costs when receiving care.

How much does Medicare cost?

Medicare costs vary based on the coverage you choose:

  • Part A: Usually free if you or your spouse worked 10+ years. Otherwise, there may be a premium.
  • Part B: Standard premium in 2025 is $185/month (may be higher based on income).
  • Part D & Medicare Advantage: Costs vary by plan, provider, and coverage level.

We’ll walk you through your estimated costs to ensure you pick the best plan for your budget.

Can I keep my doctor with Medicare?

Yes, but it depends on your plan:

  • Original Medicare + Medigap: You can see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare.
  • Medicare Advantage: You may need to use a network of doctors and hospitals specific to your plan.

Not sure if your doctor is covered? We can help you check before you enroll!

What if I’m still working when I turn 65?

If you have employer-sponsored health coverage, you may not need to enroll in Medicare right away. However, once you retire or lose employer coverage, you’ll qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to sign up for Medicare without penalty.

We’ll review your options to ensure you make the right choice for your situation.

How do I know which Medicare plan is right for me?

Choosing the right Medicare plan depends on:
✔ Your current health needs (doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.).
✔ Your budget (monthly premiums vs. out-of-pocket costs).
✔ Your preferred doctors and hospitals (network restrictions).

At Illinois Benefit Advisory, we offer personalized Medicare planning to help you compare plans and make the best choice for your health and finances.
